Happy Earth Day! Who Pollutes the Most?!

It’s a good day when I can take a shot at both liberals and conservatives in under a minute.

American forces generate some 750,000 tons of toxic waste annually—more than the five largest U.S. chemical companies combined.

The military vehicles used in both Iraq and Afghanistan produced many hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and sulfur dioxide in addition to CO2

The DOD is the country’s single largest consumer of fuel, using about 4.6 billion gallons of fuel each year.

Military vehicles consume petroleum-based fuels at an extremely high rate: use about 300 gallons during eight hours of operation

Between 2003-2007, the war generated at least 141 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, more each year of the war than 139 of the world’s countries release annually.

The health impact of war-related environmental exposure remains controversial.

Since 2001, there has been a 251 percent rise in the rate of neurological disorders, a 47 percent increase in the rate of respiratory problems, and a 34 percent rise in rates of cardio-vascular disease in military service members serving in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan that is related to the problem of toxic dust.

There has also been war-accelerated deforestation and destruction of wildlife. Total forest area decreased 38 percent in Afghanistan from 1990 to 2007.
