Required Reading (Watching?): Innocents Betrayed

I think Rollo has done an excellent job writing about the second amendment and our right to own guns.  I’ve purposely avoided the topic because it is everywhere right now and I didn’t think I could really add a whole lot to the conversation.  However, one day last week I was clicking around on twitter and came across this short documentary.  I cannot remember the twitter handle that posted the link, otherwise I’d give him or her credit for bringing this to my attention.  I clicked play expecting to watch about 5 minutes of it but I couldn’t get up from the computer until it was over about 40 minutes later.

There are some disturbing pictures in the movie, but I haven’t seen anyone do a better job explaining the reason why we need to have the right to defend ourselves against anything or anyone who might attack. This is really a must-watch, here is the link.

To go along with this documentary, I read this quote earlier today from Stefan Molyneux:

“If you are for gun control, then you are not against, guns, because the guns will be needed to disarm people. So it’s not that you are anti-gun. You’ll need the police’s guns to take away other people’s guns. So you’re very Pro-Gun, you just believe that only the Government (which is, of course, so reliable, honest, moral and virtuous…) should be allowed to have guns. There is no such thing as gun control. There is only centralizing gun ownership in the hands of a small, political elite and their minions.”

Why is there such a focus on high-powered assault rifles anyway?  Are they really a problem?  It isn’t really that easy to conceal an AK-47.  If someone is carrying one, everybody can see it. If the government cared about our safety shouldn’t they be going after handguns? Could they possibly have an alternative motive?

The FBI reports that in 2011, 323 people in the United States were murdered by rifle, 6,220 were murdered by handgun.  Those numbers aren’t even in the same ballpark!  They report that 728 murders where the result of hands, fist, feet, etc.  Most of us have those.  They are responsible for more than twice as many murders as rifles!

There is plenty of evidence to suggest we’re headed down a similar path as those countries in the documentary:

If our country’s path does not change, there will be nowhere to hide when it all falls apart.  They’ll have our protection, and they’ll know who has what weapons due to gun registration.

Oh wait, never mind.  This is the US, that stuff happens in crazy, far-away lands.  It can’t happen here.
