Taxes: Just a box of a chocolates?

The other day, I found myself in a Twitter discussion when I answered someone who asked, “What’s the economic difference between a subsidy and a tax credit?”  Eventually, I asked my discussion partner if he was okay with paying taxes for something he disagreed it.

Here is the rest of the exchange.

The inability by Simon to answer direct questions is telling.  I don’t believe that he was trying to skirt the issues or was intentionally misdirecting the conversation.  I think he was being genuine.  His problem was that the ideas that I presented to him were very likely outside of his paradigm.  He was trying to make what I was saying fit into his worldview.  He didn’t know how else to respond and so he displayed some serious cognitive dissonance.
