At the end of the month, it will be four years since Joseph Pacini, an at the time 52-year-old man from Clifton Heights, PA, was gunned down by police following a charge of making terroristic threats.  We immediately picked the story up as soon as it happened since it occurred so close to where we grew up.  We found the videos that Joseph Pacini made that featured his threats.  He clearly appeared to be mentally unstable.  We questioned why the police intervened the way they did—it seemed clear that ambushing him would surely result in violence.

After the first article, Joseph Pacini’s friend reached out to us to talk about him.  Pacini had suffered from Huntington’s disease, a debilitating condition that causes people to lose their motor skills and their ability to function mentally.  The Joseph we saw in the videos was not the Joseph that she loved.  It is truly a tragic story even before the police killed him.

We hear many stories about people who end up on the wrong side of the news, but we often never hear the side that brings humanity to the people we’re so quick to cast aspersions upon.  Joseph Pacini was suffering from a severe mental illness—and the police treated it with about two dozen bullets.
